Dont use fish mate, just use pure Ammonia
Not happy on using chemicals to do cycling, but is this the preferred method now?
Fishless cycling with ammonia is the preferred method. My own experience was that it was slow as death (non existent, despite adding all sorts of "miracle" bacterial starters) until I ended up adding a mature sponge from the guy I bought my discus from. Cycling, in terms of ammonia and nitrite degradation, was pretty much instant thereafter. Whether the tank is properly matured is another matter. I suspect that only comes from having fish in the tank excreting all sorts of stuff and introducing the right bacteria, whatever they are.
Yes this is the prefered method
Thanks Gents, cycling will start on Sunday now the fun begins
Jizzy any particular brand? or should I try local chemist for the pure stuff?
Sorry mate for late reply but as Rob has already said , ebay approx £3 n has to be pure Ammonia as kleen-off is
use the dosage calculater or have alook through the hunderds of threads here on BIDKA
We will all help if u have any problems & yes it can take up to 6/7 weeks but it is the humane way
Already ordered, initial dose will be to 3ppm for 500l tank, then I will do more research for rest of period. Thanks for the help
Photos as promised, collecting cabinet panels this weekend and still waiting for a few bits to arrive.
List of equipment; Oceanlife Overflow, Jebao DCT4000 pump, 300w Schego Titanium heater and Elitech U1000 heat controller, sump is approx. 60l with filter sponge and wool. Waiting for a Kessil 360w Amazon sun to arrive, cycling has started so hoping to start stocking mid January.
Well 1 week into fishless cycle and ammonia has gone from 3ppm to 1.5ppm so going in right direction, but is this on course?
Yep but dont forget to keep topping ammonia up to 3ppm
I am following the cycle from Mark @ DD, so will top up to 1ppm when ammonia is 0
Well cycling finished just over a week ago, and have just bought my first Malaysian discus!!
Bought from Discus for the Discerning, 3 Mosiac Leopards, 3 Penang Eruptions and 3 GLSS. Also whilst we were there the wife has picked the next 9 once all is settled. Going for Frama Rosa, White Butterfly and Golden San Merah.
Fingers crossed that all goes well. The only downside is that my bloody bogwood is still floating !!! Even with 2 heavy bags of sand holding it down.
Any updates on this mate ? How were the fish ? Any problems with the start up ?
All the best
