I purchased all of my discus from a major breeder and thought I'd post his recipe for beef heart in case anyone was interested.
Beef heart mix 1 veal heart cleaned of all fat and veins. 1 10 Oz package of frozen spinach. Thaw and squeeze out as much water as possible. 3 large hand fulls of dry flake food. Any type Wardley's, Tetra, ect. 6 multy vitamins. (One A Day, Theragram, Centrum, ect.) Wash off the protective coating and let them soak in small cup with enough water to cover them so that they break down into a soup. 6 cloves of raw garlic. 1 small box of Knox unflavored gelatin. (entire contents) Place ingredients in a food processor. After the paste is done place in freezer bags. When feeding this mix break off a piece and place it on a folded paper towel to thaw. This will drain off any excess blood. Then feed. |

Sound delicious Sue,
For the Uk members, when you ask for heart (if you are going to make it yourself), make sure you ask for Ox Heart, it's the same thing as beef heart, but it's what it's called over here. You can purchase heart already prepared in Morrisons, you still have to prepare it yourself, as they are not as fussy as we are when it comes to taking all the viens and grissle out. I personally use a local high street traditional butcher, a heart come in at about £4.50 - £5.00 I normally buy 2 hearts, and my butcher does all the trimming for me for no extra cost. Steve |

I'm planning on making this recipe with deer heart, if hubby gets a deer this year!
Has anyone ever tried using Gel-Tek Color or Growth gel in place of regular gelatin? I read somewhere that someone tried it and that it worked very well keeping the BH together with the added benefit of having vitamins and minerals, etc. targeted for either color or growth. Do you have Gel-Tek products in the UK? They are made by Aquarium Products, I believe. Last edited by poconogal; 06-Dec-2006 at 03:55 PM.. |

Haven't seen gel-tek yet in the UK. The authorities are very strict on what can and can't be sold where meds are concerned. The VMD (Veterinary Medical Directorate I think) are over cautious in my view.

Just use shrimp as a binder. It works great, plus it's very nutritious!!
