I am not sure if I have made a mistake or not ? As there is so much conflicting advice from both L f s and the net. So any advice or experience would be great.
I have 88 g tank. With 6 med size discus. Usual tank mates 30 c tetra 5 streb 2 rams 1 true Siamese flying fox. I have had 1 gn plec For about 18 mths with no probs and it is approx 4 inch. Well I do love this fish and he is no bother. There is loads of Bog wood and plants in the tank. This is were I might of got carried away I purchased 2 more approx 2 inch each. That almost school boy error impulse buy. Now I am starting to panick alittle. Now from what I can gather and know from mine these are the smaller ones that grow really small and get to about 6 inches which will prob take four years anyway. Now the discus will always take priority but they all seem happy lots of chill areas for all in tank. Will this be an issue ? Anyone got any long term experience. ? Advice. ? |

Hi,
Not sure how they will react together but were the new fish quarantined? |

Yeah the biggest mistake would have been to add the new fish without quarantining them!

Hi they have been in the l f s for over a mth. Unfortunately I did not at home. I agree I now realise that with my impulse behaviour have made another school boy error.
Let's hope it does come back to haunt me but do appreicate your comments. Any other advice from your experiences would be great. Still learning as I go. Thanks |

The trouble with LFS is they throw shipment after shipment into their systems, some have the luxury of UV sterilizers some don't.... but thats about all they offer in terms of QT to new shipments!
When ever I bought fish from LFS years ago I would always have outbreaks of disease in my tank, it was only after keeping discus for the last 4 years and having first hand experience of the way that some LFS operate I came to the realization that most have no concern for outbreaks of illness with the fish so long as they have your money in their till and the fish have entered your tank.... its your responsibility then that they are sick and up to you to buy whatever placebo they recommend from their shelf! Thank GOD I found discus and this forum 3 years ago! ![]() Last edited by SteveO; 19-Jan-2010 at 11:52 PM.. |

Thanks steve o
good advice, lets hope i have got away with it this time but yes i think you are correct the majority of LFS do not really care about the aftercare or potential pitfalls of adding new fish, i have been a new fishkeeper for about 18mths & i do not think any LFS that i have purchased fish from has ever said ensure you Q them for a mth. Does anyone out there have experience of L81 with discus ? |

Hi Julius,
I've had one of these in with my discus for approx 3 years with no problems. Unfortunately i lost it a couple of weeks ago, but wouldn't hesitate to get another. Obviously this is only my experience. Others may have had problems. Hopefully you won't. Hope this eases your mind a bit. Sean |

Thanks sean
That does help. They are such great fish and they add a different dimension to the discus tank. Much appreciated. |

i have kept nuggetts and Discus together, you will need to drop some food each night so they get enough food. this can be waffers or pellet type food. Peas and Cucmber is also very good for them

Not the best of fish to have in groups, GN's tend to be very very territorial and very aggressive to other plecs and there 'OWN' kind. L81 still could reach 8 inches+ but is it actually an L81 you have?
Just observe the behaviour becasue it could all end in tears with the older/larger one becoming very aggressive to the point of killing the other 2. The other thing would be to make sure it/they get a varied diet, to much meat/protein matter can cause serious gut problems later in life. Congrats on the new purchase anyways ![]() |

yeah alot of golden nuggets id get mixed up and half the time you end up with the larger type. one they fight also if they do you might have to remove one as they do tend to show blood once the fight starts. |

Thanks good advice, they have been in about a mth no signs of aggression yet but will monitor.
I can only hope they are L181 as that is what they are sold as, the LFS said it would be no problem getting two more, shame i was not a member on this sight first. Quite tempted to take them back, nightmare to try to get them though and would prob cause to much upset to the discus |
